    The Bible of Clicker Training
I have never seen a dog training book like this. My dog is a crazy, hyper maniac without any focus but since I’ve been following this book he is learning insanely fast and having a blast doing it. I trained him to follow the target stick and the first time I ever tried it he heeled BEAUTIFULLY with it. Left turn, right turn, about turn, he was staying with me without crowding me, lagging or anything. He had no leash on! He was just following the stick! When I took the target stick away HE WAS STILL DOING IT! He had VERY little heeling experience before this. All I could get out of him was to maybe follow me somewhere in the realm of heel position for about 10 feet. Turns were out of the question. Not anymore! It’s like….the target stick finally clarified it in his mind.If I want to show him how to position himself for any behavior I just lead him with the target stick. Where the nose goes the body follows. He remembers the motion. Once he learns the que I can take the stick away. It’s amazing. For every dog I’ve ever worked with…clicker training has been a way of great motivation and very clear communication…hence the fact dogs catch on fast…but no book I read compares to this one. It’s the closest you can get to having a very wise trainer with you showing you. He’s very detailed and tries so hard to save you from making any mistakes that you will regret later. He helps prepare you for the path ahead and keep from digging any pits you’ll later fall into. Having never competed in anything other than Rally and Conformation I need this! You see…clicker training is a VERY POWERFUL, VERY EFFECTIVE, VERY FAST training method….but it’s only as good as the trainer! You need knowledge! This gives you that knowledge!I will update this review after I start trialing. I am certain I will be very successful. I’ve been to trials and the biggest problem I see is the dog not having what’s expected of him clear in his mind to start with.

    clearly outlined training principles
I believe this is the best PRACTICAL book on clicker training no matter how old it is. Not only does it explain the science behind it (and perfectly sufficiently for normal user), it also gives very clear and detailed advice and recomendations on how to use operant conditioning to build various exercises, something very precious when you have nobody experienced to help you start. I trained some exercises as desribed in this book, some using different methods and some exercises not in this book but always trying to keep in mind principles here described and I am very satisfied with the results. Which does not mean we do not have to train hard but both me and my dogs have better understanding of what we do than with my previous dogs trained just by “positive methods”. I highly recommend the book to non-competing handlers and handlers training other disciplines than obedience. Training a few exercises following this book will help you gain training skills which you may apply wherever you wish. I also recommend to find someone experienced who will watch you train from time to time and give you useful feedback on what and why your dog is doing and on what you are doing, this will increase your ability to learn from this book and gain more practice.

This is a book for a serious obedience trainer.
This is exactly what I was looking for. A book dedicated to application of the clicker training method to the obedience and performance rings. I can understand why an individual not so engaged would find it a overwhelming. If you have never been or never intend to be in a performance ring much of the insight into typical ring issues will pass over your head or seem irrelevant to your needs. In that case, find a simpler book that just describes the basic approach and see if you can actually stick with that – in my training experience most people don’t – lose the clicker and ultimately revert to old style negative reinforcement. Clicker training is not a magic method, it requires a lot of insight, patience, and persistence on the part of the trainer. This book is a valuable resource for those so inclined – not so much for the someone who thinks they are just going to click a device and the dog is going to sit. It doesn’t work that way.

A wonderful guide to clicker training – Not Just For Competitive Obedience!
This book is a great resource for clicker training your dog! Morgan Spector not only gives you the steps but the reason for them and the reasons why they work. This has been an invaluable resource for me in training many of my dogs – even though none of them ever competed in obedience classes. I used the techniques in this book with my bird dog as well as a service dog I am training. Clicker training is a wonderful way to get good behaviors while building a strong relationship with your canine partner based on trust. Spector does a fantastic job teaching through written word. He gives you many options for tools and understands that not everyone has clicker trained a dog before. He starts from the very beginning, including chapters about the way your dog thinks and why clicker training is an effective method.

    Clicker Training for Obedience
Here is an excellent and thorough book for teaching not only basic obedience but advanced exercises as they occur in AKC Open and Utility competition. I was already familiar with clicker training from my agility classes but found this a wonderful way of promoting willing and happy performance of sometimes complex behaviors. Do away with choke and prong collars, “ear pinches” and leashes and instead motivate your dog with clicks and treats. I found the variable reinforcement plan for heeling got my dogs to really focus and want to stay with me in perfect heel position, and the step by step descriptions for training directed jumping and scent discrimination especially detailed and helpful. This is clearly a book that has been very well thought out and planned by someone who also knows how to write lucidly.

Altamente recomendable.

Although this book was written in the 90’s and I have only just recently picked it up to read, I must say I am thrilled that I did. I love the exercises and explanations that Morgan has provided in his writings. I have been clicker training for years but have come to some roadblocks with my recent dog and needed some clarification. This book provided that and more.

This book stands out from the crowd. It is in depth at the same time as being remarkably accessible. It gives helpful ideas and explains the reason behind their evolution. It is great to have a book that uses clicker training and helps me to prepare my dog for his obedience trials. I am overwhelmed with joy by Morgan Spector’s absolute commitment to positive training methods. My dog and I are oozing gratitude and wagging our tails.
