Shepherd whistle is one LOUD little whistle
The 575 Shepherd whistle takes a bit to learn, but once you get it right it is very versatile. You can do fairly soft whistles in a few tones (even some simple melodies), or you can let loose with some ear splitting whistles. Very small, very simple, very loud.

Very well made. Learning curve to operate.
This whistle is very well made. It’s just a folded piece of metal but it’s not some piece of stamped Chinese junk. Made in England. The English put those little extra touches in getting the stamped fancy font wording straight. The bend is perfectly straight. Quick wash with hot water and soap and no funny taste. Now, how does it work? Well to be honest I haven’t put in the time to master it yet. When I was a kid we used to fashion something similar out of railroad load metal strapping. I was pretty good at it then. Not so much now. With practice I’ll get it back I’m sure. If you have never used one of these, don’t expect to be whistling right out of the package. If I do my part it works great. Only used it a couple times so far. I expect it to work perfectly when I master it better so I’m giving it 5.

practice makes perfect
I have several of this type whistle and I enjoy them very much. I really enjoy my dogs response to these whistles. I have a couple dogs that were rescued from abusive homes and calling them can be a challenge. One of the dogs was treated terribly and if you holler at him in any way he will just roll over on his back because he thinks he’s going to take a beating best I can figure. It doesn’t matter how far away or where he is, if he’s in the road with a truck coming, roll over. Since I’ve discovered these whistles everything is great. I whistle and he comes running wagging his tail and happy. Saved us both I think. I like these ACME Nickle Silver type whistles because they are functional and last forever. There are cheaper plastic ones and expensive brass whistles but these are really worth the bang for the buck.thanks

Great whistle. Horrible metal taste.
It took me a while to get the hang of using a shepherd’s whistle. I taught myself using the plastic one sold here on Amazon. Once I felt I was proficient enough I wanted to treat myself to the metal one both because it was more visually pleasing and also because I’d heard the sound is better. The sound out of this thing IS beautiful and having taught myself on the plastic, this was easy to use. My first couple of days with it I was a very happy camper and if I’d just written my review then, It would have gotten 4 or 5 stars. Alas, after a couple of days, the taste this thing had was unbearable for me. Truly unbearable. I tried rinsing it daily and that made a little difference, but really only a little. Ultimately I had to stop using it because the lingering taste was just horrid.Next I treated myself to a high end brass version but I quickly found that to have an unpleasant (though not quite as bad as this one) taste as well. I abandoned that for a corian version. No taste whatsoever but really not as nice a piece as the metal ones. The sound is fine. I used to be silversmith and still have the whole setup in my house. I am thinking of trying to make my own out of silver. Since I wear this thing all day every day it would be nice to have one that actually looks like a nice piece of jewelry, no?So I have to wonder whether there is some chemical in my saliva that just reacts badly to these metals. Lots of people seem to love this whistle and seemingly are not bothered by the taste. I love the acme whistle company and own other whistles from their collection and have not had the taste problem. They produce such high quality stuff but this one just didn’t cut it for me.I echo the sentiments of some of the other reviewers….. definitely practice and get the hang of this before you start training your dog with it. Don’t let the little fur beast hear you whistle until you are proficient.BOTTOM LINE: I want to love the whistle, the sound is great. But for me, I couldn’t get past the rancid metal taste. For some folks this wont be a problem, in which case this would be a 5 star item.

Oh the memories
I bought this for my grandson but had to try it out before I gave it to him. I didnât buy it to train dogs though. It was something to help my grandson whistle louder. He loves it and it only took about 20 minutes for me to get a sound. I was highly impressed with myself till my grandson did it from the start. Lol.

This is fun…and loud!
I’ve been having fun learning how to use the shepherd’s whistle. If you go on YouTube you can find videos on it. It’s fun to learn how to use it, and it does take some time getting used to it, but I can almost play Mary Had A Little Lamb! Can’t wait to use it with my dogs to see how they will respond. Right now I work with it in the car while driving to learn how to use it. Would suggest you connect a lanyard, or something, on it since it doesn’t seem safe in your mouth just by itself.

Don’t bother.
Zero instructions come with this thing. If you already know how to use one, I’m sure it works great. If you don’t (like me), then good luck. The entirety of instructions I found anywhere online for these was, “Put it in your mouth. Use it to whistle,” which does not work except to make occasional strangled bird noises.I abandoned the effort and just used my time to learn to whistle without it. Waste of money and time.

Everything I wanted and MORE
This whistle is awesome. It does take some time to get it to actually whistle. Then more time to do it on purpose. However, with some time and practice you can whistle like a pro. It would probably take you a week or two if you really focused and practiced consistently.I got this whistle because I adopted a border collie mix. She is an amazing dog, but is easily bored like many border collies. I don’t have land or livestock, and I live in an apartment. So I have to mix things up to keep my dog on her feet and entertained. I got this so we could work on it with tricks both inside and out. I’m trying to work toward mastering the basic commands in different environments and then will start adding the whistle. The sound is clean and clear. AND LOUD. You can’t really practice with your friends around or at night.
