Can all cats learn to walk on a leash?
Cats who respond with curiosity to changes in their environment will be good candidates for leash walking. More fearful cats can benefit from gradual exposure to new sights and sounds. When introduced to new experiences, every cat should know how to return to their safe place. Confidence will build faster when cats know it’s their choice to explore and to return home if they get scared.
How snug should the harness be?
The harness should be a snug fit “like a glove.” The Cat School harness will be too big for young kittens. For early socialization and training, introduce kittens to an adjustable H-style harness. Switch to the Cat School harness when your kitten is old enough.

Julie Posluns is an associate certified applied animal behaviorist (ACAAB) and the founder of Cat School, an online clicker training school for cats. Before working with cats, Julie operated a dog walking business in downtown Toronto, where she took packs of six dogs to ravines and beaches around the city. She combines her dog walking experience and her knowledge of clicker training animals to help cats safely explore outdoors. Journey for the right harness is over!
I moved from a foam/fabric harness to a thin-banded collar harness and have finally found a perfect combo of safety, comfort, and cuteness in this harness. I felt like she was too hot in the padded one and sleeping in it on long car rides seemed uncomfortable for her. The thin collar one that clipped on her was good, but my kitty kept going under a bush and I was tired of pulling her out, feeling like I was strangling her. It also required more touching of the tummy to put on than this harness. This harness is very easy and quick to put on. The fit of this harness combined with the positioning of the clip on leash makes pulling her from a potentially dangerous area easier (as an aside, I also purchased the clicker from this seller and my Kitty and I are currently training for her to come me when I click for this very situation). This harness features lightweight, yet quality material. Her arms canât slip through easily, so I feel confident walking her and transporting her from car to house when I visit family (I always get nervous she will get spooked by the unfamiliar territory, escape, and I will be states away from home looking for her. The horror!). I followed the directions to get her to warm up to the Velcro noise and associate it with good feelings and treats. The noise of Velcro would have previously sent her running under my bed. I highly recommend following the training guide the harness comes with if your cat is new to this type of harness. It was very hard to resist the temptation of putting it on her first thing so I could see how cute she looked in it. I spent about two weeks getting her used to the feeling and sound of the harness before putting it on her. For the first time in our history of harnesses, she didnât growl when I put it on her. The harness is also a pretty and the color is not a âcheapâ looking blue. I love it. Worth every penny!

Thoughtful kit with comprehensive guide.
This is a fantastic kit thoughtfully designed by a cat behaviorist. I like the length of the leash â cats tend to need a little bit more slack in case they get spooked or if they are more adventurous. The harness is lightweight with strong velcro closures at the chest and belly. It has the cutest little pocket with velcro flap that can be used to insert a tracker such as an air tag. Both the harness and leash feel well made and sturdy and have reflective details for more visibility. The included booklet is a comprehensive guide to training and preparing both your cat and yourself for a positive and safe walk experience. Even though we were experienced walkers already, we learned some helpful safety tips from the booklet. We’ve tried every kind of harness and this is our favorite one so far. We have five cats of different sizes, so we we got one of each size harness and everyone has a harness that fits them perfectly.

Great find.
Although it took some time for my cat to get used to it, he has finally caught on that seeing his vest, equals a trip outside. This is made of a high quality material and easily holds my fat cat. The Velcro sticks even if barely attached and he can’t slip out like he did with other manufacturers. The leash is extra long and lets him “think” he is roaming freely when I am working in the garden. I love it and it gives both of use more time together while learning “Cat School” tricks.

Excellent for Harness Resistant Cats!
After many years and multiple harnesses, bites, scratches and watching my cat perform acrobatics to get our of everything we bought…THIS WORKS! We purchased a car bed so our very senior cat can travel with us. But we had to have a harness to clip him into the bed for safety. He didn’t fight, he didn’t struggle. After trying a few different harness styles, the Cat School harness has come out as the superior product by far. Easy to put on with the vest style, and the two large velcro straps make adjustability easy as my kitty grows. From the first time I put this on Gary the cat, he loved it! The soft, flexible material allows him to run, jump, and climb without restriction. Gary loves it so much, he doesn’t want to take it off after we come back in!He has been scared by passing cars a couple times while wearing this harness, and despite trying to flee, he was unable to get out of the harness and I was able to keep him safe. I highly recommend this harness! I just got a new kitten and came here to order one for him, but had to leave a great review first.The only thing I wish were different is color availability. I would like to have different colored harnesses for each cat, but they just come in the one color.I couldn’t recommend this harness more! Thank you Julie and Cat School!!

False advertising. No pocket for tracking device.
The picture and description both indicate there will be a pocket on the back to put an air tag in which is the whole reason I bought it. When it arrived it didnât have the pocket. I requested a replacement and the second one I received doesnât have it either. Now I have to send that back too. Annoying when you donât get what what is advertised.

Awkward fit for my cat
The harness is too loose around my catâs neck but fits just right around the belly so I canât size down. I got a size medium. That being said, my cat is probably a little overweight. I wish the velcro to fasten the harness around the neck was longer so I could make it tighter and the excess material wouldnât flap around. My cat seems to like it otherwise. I probably have to find a snugger fit harness tho so he wouldnât slip out tho. The Velcro does make a loud noise when I try to remove the harness. If you have a sensitive cat, do take note.

I highly recommend this vest!! I have tried a few different ones and this one feels the most secure and easy to put on and off!The vest is super easy to put on with two large velcro straps to hold Kitty in securly. I love how it fits in the upper area so that when the cat pulls on the leash, it doesn’t affect the throat area, but rather pulls from the chest area – no more choking!!!UPDATED SEPT. 4th, 2024 (one year after original post): These are still the best harneses…..and even though one of my boys has ourgrown it (he’s about 10 pounds, size small, Devon rex) he’s not the ‘out-in-the-stroller) cat so we will probably not upgrade his harness.That being said, out other outdoor guy that is also about ten ounds and slightly thinner (who loves to ride on top of his pet stroller for walks) will most likely need a medium now as it’s a bit smaller fitting under the belly now (they both turned 2 years old in July last year).Still, by far, the best harness I’ve had and would recommend it 100%, 100% of the time.My little boys are a year old and only about 6-7 pounds each as they are a Devon Rex breed – on the slightly smaller size with very skinny necks! :-)This harness is perfect for fitting them around the neck to avoid choking when pulling on the leash. My little grey and white guy (Spooky) is just like a dog….lol..he pulls at the leash and struts down the sidewalk without a care in the world….he is on the go!!! And I feel incredibly confident being out with him.I realize that a cat can escape almost any harness or vest – and this one is no exception to the rule….but, as responsible pet owners, we are with our cats when we have them on the leashes and so there is never any need for them to tug on the leash and escape by backing out of it violently….as in being scared of something and going cat-crazy. I have tried many many vests and harnesses and I have found this vest to be the best and the least likely to escape from (by a long shot!).There is a large reflective strip, a pocket for a tracking device, large velcro straps and a sturdy leash and buckle. There is also a great training manual included.I ordered the S/M and had to return it for the XS for my little boys – no hassle at all.I would happily buy this again for the price I paid – well constructed and very sturdy.Highly recommended!!!!

Hemos probado varios arnéses para nuestro gato, pero este de Cat School los gana a todos. Con el arnés que usamos antes, nuestro gato tuvo que meter las patitas y le costo un poco aprenderlo, y ademas no estaba muy cómodo al caminar.Este arnés nuevo tiene todo lo que falta a los demás. Es super cómodo y liviano, y se pone como una capa, asi que es mucho mas fácil. Tambien viene con su manual de como enseñar a tu gato que se acostumbre al arnés, y eso si ayudo mucho para que se enamore con el proceso.Ya llevamos varias semanas y seguimos con el manual, premiando el gatito con cada paso, y se anota que le encanta tanto que ya quiere ponerse el arnés solo para recibir su premio.La única cosa que nos tenia un poco ocupada fue el velcro, porque el arnés no lleva ningún broche ó clip. Ya tuvimos una vez un susto cuando estuvimos caminando afuera con el arnés y la correa, pero (tomando en cuenta que ningún arnés es 100% a prueba de escape cuando se trata de los gatos) el velcro si era suficiente para sostenerlo y todo salio bien.Ojo – es muy important apretar bien el arnés para que quede justo al gato. Nuestro siamés es delgadito y tiene 4.1kilos, y la talla extra chica le queda perfecto. Asi que – este arnés viene 100% recomendado por nuestro gato. (Y los premios tambien 🙂

So much better than the array of other harnesses Iâve tried. Definitely more difficult to escape from too. Very easy for my cat to adapt to this vest style harness. At 6.5 pounds, little Madge wraps up nice and snug in the XS. She is easily visible and itâs nice to have the gps tracker/treat pocket. Excellent instructions!
