Clear, concise, fun and it works
I am a recent convert to Clicker Training by way of a local trainer that is working with me and my 9 year old Karelian Bear Dog – a rescue I’ve had for 2.5 years. We are working on helping Bear (dog) become comfortable around other dogs. I also had to get him comfortable around a new kitten. Clicker training is helping both: quickly and positively. I was amazed at how well it worked with Bear and Auggie (new kitten).I was looking at Karen Pryor books and bought this one thinking that between this book and my trainer – who recommended Karen Pryor books – I would have good info for both dog and cat. This is working for me and my two.Excellent book – laid out well, easy and fun to read, easy to take things one step at a time. My house is more peaceful, more fun and Bear, Auggie and I are all happy together. 5 STARS!!

    Invaluable book!
Based on the reviews for this book I also bought Cat Training in 10 Minutes because I wasn’t sure whether this book would easily supply me with the information needed to get started. I actually think, contrary to several reviews, that his book is superior. Karen Pryor does a MUCH better job explaining in the first 17 pages of the book what clicker training is all about and how it works. This is extremely useful for novices who have never clicker trained before. She methodically teaches you a step-by-step approach. I did not feel that Cat Training in 10 Minutes adequately described how to “prime” the clicker to get started. Unless I get clear, precise instructions on the first few steps how can I become successful with more advanced training? Those first steps are crucial! Clicker Training for Cats guides the reader step-by-step when to train, how to train, how often to train and what treats to use to reward your cat, among many other great suggestions. I therefore don’t understand several reviews that claim that Karen Pryor only tells anecdotes about her cats and how this book is useless. That is just not an accurate representation! My scared kitty that I adopted from the shelter is responding beautifully. She is becoming a far more confident and secure cat. This book was invaluable!

    criticism unwarrented
I think this book has gotten a bit of an unfair bad rap because of some of the reviews. I almost didn’t buy it because of them.True, the book spends the first half dozen pages or so trying to do a “hard sell” on the concept of clicker training. That is boring and completely unnecessary because we’re already reading the book (duh), so it is just wasted space. But the meat of the book is good.Within the first 20 pages of the book, she very carefully and precisely teaches you a step-by-step approach to teaching a cat the “targeting” behavior through clicker training, which is the first thing most trainers teach. She goes really slowly step-by-step for everything from when to do it, how to do it, what treats to use to reward your cat, how often to do it etc. Then, since training additional things is only a variation of that training, she summarizes what is necessary to teach additional things. This is a common tactic for training books. Give the theory, give one very complete step-by-step example, and rely on the readers ability to generalize that to other situations. So I really don’t understand the criticism that she only tells anecdotes about her cats, and how the book is useless etc. I think for such people, most books would be useless, since this is a very common approach to learning. Anyone with a high school level reading level ought to be able to comprehend this book and attempt to put the lessons into practice. To be fair, I can’t evaluate how successful these methods are yet since I have just read the book and haven’t put them into practice, but after reading the book I feel like I understand the concept and the necessary steps to perform, and have confidence that I can attempt to train my cats in these behaviors. It seems pretty straight forward and I look forward to spending many hours in this most worthy pursuit.

    Easy to understand
Easy to understand step by step how to train your cats. Enjoy the reading then bond with your cat on her/his first day of training. Don’t forget treats and the clicker too. Im not a professional trainer. Actually this is my first time to train a pet. Fews days she’s confuse but be patient. You’ll know how smart your fur baby!

    Fine, but needs work.
Very short book… you can get all the information from online sources. I was also disappointed with how vague it was in terms of instruction. It would have been nice to see a day-by-day training list for a typical cat. Instead, the book was peppered with anecdotes about how such-and-such cat did some amazing thing after only the first day… Not really helpful, since that is not my cat and I bought this book as a step-by-step manual, not to read random stories. I also wanted more instruction on how to increase difficulty of tasks, how to know if your cat is ready to move to more difficulty, and specifics on treats. Should we always use super special treats? The book suggests using the best treats in the beginning but doesn’t provide any guidance on how to taper that off into just normal treats. Recommend as an adequate beginner’s guide to clicker training, but you really need to find websites to learn more in-depth.

Libro troppo caro sia per la qualità delle pagine e sia per il contenuto. Senza immagini.

I am a first time cat owner. Never have had cats and never have been around cats. After 2 months adopting a 3-month old kitten, I read this book. The book explains the foundation of your relationship with your cat. After reading the book, I changed some of my daily routines with my cat (like feeding her twice a day instead of laying food in front of her at all times). I also started the clicker training with the help of the book and some videos on youtube and after only a few trials, my little kitten can now do high five and play dead. Following the advice in the book I was able to keep my kitten off the dinner table, stop ruining the plants, sit quietly while I clip her nails, and even trained her to drink from tab water (which made her be friendly with water so I can give her a bath of some sort).

This book is fantastic! My indoor cat is not a fan of most toys, and she was pretty bored before we started clicker training. The book showed us how to model and reward behaviours, and now she is eager to show off her new skills. She can give high fives, jump up and down on command, bat a ball back & forth to us, and the list keeps on growing. If your pet is bored, try clicker training!

I was surprised to find out that clicker training really works. Who woulda thunk it? Even an aloof cat can be trained with simple commands reinforced with a clicker. I would definitely recommend this book to someone who is interested in training their cat.
