Excellent, comprehensive teaching guide on using a clicker.
Likes: very thorough, comprehensive, easy to understand. Exceptionally useful for anyone that trains animals or has pets.Dislikes: Overall excellent book, no real dislikes. I joked that the book could be summarized as “Click and treat when the dog does what you want it to do”, but the extra detail will be helpful for anyone who is serious about learning more about this topic. This book would seriously benefit from a book on tape version.Recommended reading for: Anyone who owns pets or trains animals.Rating reason: Excellent book, personable author. I really appreciated the down-to-earth tone of the book and the real life examples throughout.

52 pages. In total.
This book is 52 pages. That’s it, precisely 52. Wasn’t part of the description, btw. So, I probably would have bought another book if I had realized how short it was (I was trying to decide between a couple anyway, and the page total would have tipped me in another direction). All that said, it’s not a bad book. No doggie miracles, yet but these things take time. The book does a good job of defining what clicker training “is” and “is not” as well as answering common questions. Do, of course, realizes that doing these things takes up page space…meaning less of those 52 pages are for instructing you on clicker training; really only section two does that (it’s a four section book). The step-by-step instructions are approximately 20 pages. (Of course the other text is relevant to how you carry out those instructions.) It’s nice, handleable introduction. We’ll see how my dog does; good luck with yours!

Karen Pryor is amount the best animal trainers in the world
If training your dog faster, with great retention, happier, without using force or punishment then Karen Pryor is your girl. There are some really great trainers out there amongst a lot of bad ones. Of them all Karen Pryor is the best of the best. All positive work and really why would you want to shock or punish your best friend into following you commands if there is a much better way?

Excellent method for starting a puppy.
I’ve been clicker training horses for over 10 years and clicker training works very well for developing a connection, focus and communication. For those “what’s in it for me?” horses – it makes lessons fun. However- I adopted an Australian Shepard puppy who is a reactive extrovert, VERY smart, very curious and very communicative. I wanted to make sure there were no holes in our training and this book is a gem for getting the basics right. Next is to do something useful with his boing boing jumping…

great for beginners
But not anything you canât find on the internet for free. Overall, an easy read that is likely informative to first time pet owners.

Great training resource, one i’ve used for years
I used Karen Pryor’s Clicker Training for Dogs with my first pooch, Gadget. He was the best dog I’ve ever had, and had SO many tricks up his furry little sleeves as a result of the positive reinforcement provided by clicker training, and the guidance provided in this book. I lost that text many years ago, and lost Gadget to Lymphoma at the turn of the year. Fast forward a couple months, and now I’ve got a rescue puppy. My first move on learning I’d been approved for my precious new furbaby was to find her book, again. This time I was very pleased to find it available electronically through Kindle! It doesn’t come with a clicker, but it also costs less in electronic format.I won’t give away any of the tips from the book, but let me tell you, if you follow Karen’s instructions for helping your dog to associate treats with a specific sound, and then use the sound to trigger that reward response, you will have success. Just keep working with your dog! This text is easy to read and understand, and begins with a clear introduction about why this method works.

The techniques shown here are easy to put into practice
The techniques shown here are easy to put into practice, I have done it and they work. What is not very clear to me is how one moves from the whole clicker- treat thing to just giving the dog a verbal command and rewarding him with no treats and no clicks. The book mentions something aout this, but personally I have missed clear examples, to use them as a guide.

A MUST HAVE FOR ANYONE WHO IS A DOG’S “PERSON”
I purchased this book Getting Started Clicker Training For Dogs by Karen Pryor because I am self-training my service dog. I am using it in conjunction with Sue Ailsby’s Training Levels: Steps to Success Vol 1 and 2 from clean run dot com. This book is a MUST for anyone to understand and learn how to train ANY pet using ONLY positive reinforcement. No more yanking, pulling, punishing, manipulating, choke collars, etc. This will help you UNLEARN all the “dominance” and “pack leader” and NEGATIVE training methods you may have learned over the years. It will help you have a TRUE friend and TRUE partner – whether a pet or service animal.See also (in you local library?) Her book DON’T SHOOT THE DOG. And learn how to apply positive reinforcement not only to animals but to people too.GREAT little booklet. Short, to the point and fun.A must have in your personal library. It will open your mind. And make you a better person.

Loved this quick and easy to read how-to by Karen Pryor. Teaches the basics for beginners to start clicker training. I also recommend her book “reaching the animal mind” for a more in depth understanding.
