    TONS of information!
I bought Alexandra’s first clicker training book waayyy back in the day and positively devoured it! I had been badly injured by an accomplished rogue mare who had experienced every other mode of training and hated them all. She was a 12 year old repository of anger. She had a short fuse and a very hot temper.I started her in clicker training with her on one side if the pasture fence and me safely, bandages and sling and all, on the other. This was the one form of training that nobody had trued with her to date. (Note: if they had done it correctly and tried it with her, she would not have been the killer that she had become!)She went from a telescoping neck, straight up in the back deeply sunken to a soft died, trusting me, or at least with me. She learned to put her nose on a target, And I could slide a 5 gallon bucket lid under the fence in point to it and she would round her back and drop her nose until it touched the bucket lid and eventually she’ll learn to keep her nose down as long as it took before she heard the click and got the treat. She was really coming around and it broke my heart to have to sell her off down the river. But I was too badly injured to be able to haul hay bales, and take care of her through the winter on the coast. In the weird thing was, that mayor, I believe loved me. I believe she trusted me to a certain extent. I had had her walk up behind me, and back me up as I was facing off against a couple of horses on the other side of the fence who were loose, and who had been tormenting the smear. I could feel her presence behind me when I couldn’t see her, it felt like a large, angry guardian angel protecting me.In this Mary had never intended to injure me. She just wanted to force me to drop the lead rope so she could go off down the road and investigate. The two geldings that were probably 60 feet away in another pasture. She was very good at getting her way and excellent with her back feet.So fast forward your Slater. I bought this book and have been underlining and marking pages like crazy. For those who want a checklist way of doing things where you don’t have to think, assimilate, ponder, and come up with bite-size solutions, this may not see you. Because working with behavior modification and training is not a checklist activity! In this case, each horse will be different. That’s why we have chocolate, vanilla and strawberry in the world—lol. There’s tremendous variety amongst mammals, , and each being has its own set of experiences and thought processes. So, having worked with a very disturbed mirror in the past with clicker training, did I think this book was worth the price? Yep! Every friggin’ Penny! The book is into Fasley more detail than Alexandra’s first book did. She gives more examples, has excellent photos, and goes to great links, and trouble to explain what’s wise house and where force you might say.Her first book was kind of here’s the way. However, this book, will launch you like an expert diver, bouncing, and then diving off of a high diving platform, into being able to think creatively, and come up with the best possible training for you and your horse. While staying safe, I might add, by the way – lol! I pity I hadn’t discovered Alexandra‘s first book before I was injured.Oddly enough, although I am in enthusiastic supporter of clicker training, and this book has shared much healthier treats for the horses than what I used the first time around, I find myself in a very challenging area to do clicker training with my three horses. The book is giving me some ideas for modifications and I will be pursuing those one by one. With Alexandra’s first book I think there would be certain amount of trial and error built into it for most people. It’s a good book and I loved it but it doesn’t give you everything that you need to have the skill set to be able to think independently And solve the dead ends and road blocks that are inevitable to show up between what you want your horse to learn and what they’re learning. If you really take this book to Hert, and read it over and over, so that you’ve really got what she’s saying in your mind, that will come to you when you’re working with your horse!

This book is a need , not a want , for all horse owners.
I love Alexandra Kurland. This book is great for all trainers and those who have horses. I’m a dog trainer and I’ve been clicker training my horses for awhile now, she makes the process seem so doable. This is not a book you just read right through. I suppose you could but there is a lot to absorb. Take it exercise by exercise. I’m not all the way through it yet but it has been so helpful and sheds so much clarity on the foundational behaviors. She writes so it is easy to understand, and you can hear her wit and positivity through her written words which keeps it interesting. There are some pictures to help you understand what the training and behaviors look like but your imagination is also required. I would also encourage you to follow her podcast if you don’t already. Thank you so much for all you do for the horses Alexandra! I hope to join your clinics someday.

My new go to horse training bible!
Wow wow wow!!!! I’ve only been thumbing through Alexandra Kurland’s newest book that just arrived and I am blown away. After only a day I’ve barely touched the surface of what’s contained within. The depth and breadth of knowledge is astounding. Having personally begun working with Alexandra, I knew it would be good, but it is so much more than I expected.Science based and accurate from cover to cover and still all the information is presented in a completely user friendly way. It’s so easy to read, understand, make a training plan and take it to your horse in a real world setting! My first impression of the book is a culmination of Alexandra’s lifetime of working with and training horses and teaching their people. A legacy of her life’s work in education and her collaborations within the world of horses and the world of modern animal training. This book is a MUST HAVE training manual for every horse owner, clicker trainer from novice to advanced and ANY traditional trainer looking to revise their horsemanship skills to solve any and all types of ground manners issues and teach husbandry and hoof care behaviors and so much more that horses need to understand in order to be safe and successful living in a humans world with us. It’s not possible to list all the important behaviors horses must know that are contained within. I am going to need some extra copies for myself and to gift to my horsey friends when they buy a new horse or their first horse! If you’ve had a horse who was difficult to catch, halter, lead, lift feet for hoof care, there’s something for you.If you would like to ride with softness and release from the slightest asking of aids and no escalation because your horse understands how to organize its body to give, this book is for you.If you’re working with your first ever horse or have been a pony clubber riding since you were a three year old, this book is still for you.I highly recommend to anyone caring for or working with horses in any capacity. It’s so good.

Good quality books about clicker training for horses are few and far between and I’m always on the look-out for new ones. Alexandra Kurland’s latest book is fantastic: packed with information, practical guides for all horse-human interaction, prioritising safety and enjoyment. It pulls off the rare trick of being equally relevant to clicker training beginners and experienced trainers. Highly recommended.

I really don’t have the words to express not only the level of skill, knowledge and expertise of Alexandra Kurland, but also her overwhelming kindness and generosity in sharing her time to help me [and so many others] to rebuild not only my confidence, but also to build a relationship with my horse, which was of absolute paramount importance to me. I must add that this has all been completed online whilst she is in the USA, and I am in the UK.I was a horse owner with dreams of bringing up and training a youngster, without the issues that I had encountered from previously trained ‘ready made’ horses. The youngster that I bought however, could not have been further from my dreams. My 2 year old knew no boundaries, he reared, he would bite and absolutely everything was aversive to him. I struggled for almost 3 years. I could not even put a head collar on him, and a former, well respected ‘trainer’, told me to buy a field safe head collar. I was devastated that I could not perform the most basic of husbandry requirements due to my horse’s unpredictable and dangerous behaviour.Frank features in Alex’s book. You will see that I wear a safety helmet. I wore this helmet every time I was with Frank, even in his stable. Alex however, has given me the skills to teach Frank alternative behaviours, and she is also teaching me the skills to recognise when Frank needs help. Alex is teaching me how to help Frank and at the same time, she is very ‘sneakily’ helping me to regain my confidence.I no longer wear a safety helmet to be with my horse, but I would do so, if I had to, because ‘safety always comes first’.Frank and I are still at the very early stages of our training. We are learning together and we enjoy each other’s company. Alex has transformed our lives. She has no idea of the impact that she has had on us both, but having Alex as my mentor is a truly positively reinforcing experience. My level of training will be completely different to everyone else’s, however, I can honestly say that this book, in whatever format, will meet the needs of every single horse owner.I can also say that I would argue vehemently, that you will not find a better trainer than Alex or the people that she has trained, anywhere in the world. Their compassion and expertise on the training of horses (and other animals) knows no boundaries.Thank you Alex. Frank and I are forever grateful.
